Overview - Find Yourself In Nature!

This fantastic grade 1 scramble of the Crib Lem Spur, is located in the fantastic Carneddau mountain range, which is situated in Ogwen Valley, a stunning part of the Snowdonia National Park in north Wales. This wide glacial valley is surrounded by soaring mountains, and features placid lakes as well as historic towns and industrial heritage.

We begin by making our way out of the village of Bethesda, which has grown since it’s humble beginnings as just a small chapel, with the explosion of slate mining in the area. We now follow a route mirroring the river Afon Llafar, passing an ancient settlement before turning south and heading to the beginning of our ascent. Eventually we begin this top drawer scramble in this dramatic mountain setting.  On the way up are faced with classic scrambling, which in places have a little technical aspect to them giving rise to it’s grade 1 status. It doesn’t take too long for us to reach the top of  Crib Lem, where we’ll stop for a short break to take in what we’ve just accomplished, before continuing to the summit of Carnedd Dafydd. The views from here are spectacular, taking in the adjacent Glyderau mountain range.

We now continue by bagging Carnedd Llewyllyn (Wales' 2nd highest Peak) and Foel Grach before following a path back down along the river Afon Caseg. A fulfilling mountain day, for those looking for something a little more interesting, challenging and away from the hustle and bustle of Snowdon and as good an area as anywhere in Snowdonia!

Terrain and Difficulty:

The hikes involves challenging terrain, with rocky paths and steep gradients. Hikers should have a good level of fitness and be prepared for variable weather conditions. 

Fitness Levels

You should be comfortable walking for at least 10km with a backpack and have a head for heights as it includes a number of grade 1 scrambles.

• Swimsuit, Swim Shoes and Towel (for those opting for the cold water dip).
